The Blue Ocean is a small company with an informal work style.  There are no formal roles, and each person gets the opportunity to wear many hats throughout the course of a project.  Still, we’re looking for partners that will allow us to focus our attention to two critical areas of our business:

Web Designer / Developer

We’re looking for a friendly, enthusiastic designer with a well-rounded set of design skills, but with a particular penchant for creating beautiful things that happen on the web. 

A demonstrated thorough knowledge of the applications in the Adobe suite is assumed.  While great design skills are important, it’s nothing without well-structured code.  You must be completely comfortable authoring standards-compliant HTML and CSS code, and understand why this is important to us and our clients.  You should also be able to generate Flash content, and recognize when and where it’s a good a design fit.

Also, your skills should extend beyond elegant design.  The ExpressionEngine CMS has been an outstanding addition to our tool kit, and it’s revolutionized the way we approach our website projects. It allows us to tackle most common aspects of website functionality with very little additional custom scripting required.  This is a win for both us and our clients.  Quicker and more affordable website builds mean everyone stays happy.  As EE works so well for us, it’s the way we intend to work whenever possible going forward.  Therefore, demonstrated experience with ExpressionEngine is required.  You should be able to design and build a fully functional EE driven website from initial design mockups and wireframes to a finished production product.

Coding skills such as JavaScript and the jQuery library, and PHP—particularly with the CodeIgniter framework—are a definite plus.

Business Development / Client Relations Partner

By their own admission, the folks at The Blue Ocean were born to create and communicate for others - sometimes at the expense of neglecting to properly sell themselves.  The business of attending to our current clients’ activity has left us little time to focus attention on new business development.  As such, we’re looking for a qualified candidate to help us expand our outreach to potential new clients.

The Blue Ocean is seeking an extremely motivated, team-focused business development partner who believes strongly in the quality products and services the team provides, and one who’s comfortable and excited to inform others of our work.  As a representative of the Blue Ocean, he or she will identify and pursue new business opportunities and convert them into project partnerships. Once a contract is signed, this same individual should be able to handle the entire scope of client relations until the project is complete. As an advocate for the client, this individual will help find ways to maximize the effective impact of a client’s campaign budget.

An out-of-the box thinker, this person will be constantly creating new business opportunities and innovating novel solutions to existing business problems.  The ideal candidate should have outstanding interpersonal and communications skills combined with creativity and a through understanding of the world of Internet and print communications.  Beyond the buzzwords and trends of the moment,  s/he should understand the tangible business purpose behind the solutions we offer.  A background in marketing, design and/or communications is essential.
